purification after death
Fr Dr Joseph Thondiparambil
For a believer death is not the end of life, but the entrance to eternal life. With death life does not end but changes.

ABORTION IN THE CHRIST AN PERSPECTIVE
Fr. Dr. Hormis Mainatty
Deliberate abortion is the meanest and most horrendous onslaught against human life. It is worse than murder because here the murder victim is an innocent human life which cannot defend itself even in a feeble way.

SHOWER OF BLESSINGS THROUGH THE WORD
Martin Jacob, Kuttikkadan, Pariyaram, Thrissur
It was my listening to the Word on a regular basis at Potta Ashram that gave me solace during my moments of troubles and tribulations. In spite of completing my education, I did not get a proper job. I wrote different tests and appeared in different interviews. But I was never successful. But the Lord had not abandoned me. My family members and I prayed tearfully to the Lord and he responded to our prayers positively. As I was taking part in a retreat in Potta Ashram, the priest announced during the adoration time, that I would soon be employed. That very day I got appointment as a teacher in a school. The Lord has given me a number of blessings because of my ardent prayers. I was not a brilliant student but I passed M.A. B.Ed. In the beginning I was not able to understand the Word clearly. But today when the Word is proclaimed and explained I understand the meaning clearly through the power of the Holy Spirit. I also realized the importance of reading the Bible regularly. I made it a habit to read some part of the Bible every day. My mother used to listen to my reading and she was cured of a swelling in her ears that was bothering her for nearly 6 years. I sincerely pray that all of us become not merely the listeners of the Word but also its practitioners. Praise the Lord! Blessed be his name!

RELIEF FROM DISEASE AND DEBT
Nirmala Kamalasanan, Cherupuzha, Kannur
I am from a Hindu family. We were in a severe financial crisis. At this time I got an opportunity to go and take part in a retreat at DRC Muringoor. Within one month of my taking part in the retreat our financial problem was solved. But later there was another crisis. Then both my husband and I went for a retreat and prayed with all our heart. The good Lord worked a lot of wonders in our lives. I had a stone in my gall bladder. It was removed through a surgery. After some time a stone developed in the tube connected to the liver. The doctor was of the opinion that another surgery would create a lot of complications. At this time I prayed and pledged my testimony in Vachanolsavam if God granted me a cure without surgery. I am glad to say a scan later showed that the stone in the tube had vanished without a trace. Praise the Lord!

Pope says World Youth Day contrasts with young people's escapism
Pope Benedict XVI highlighted the \"authentic joy\" experienced by World Youth Day participants and said it stood in stark contrast to the drug-fueled escapism affecting many young people today. The pope, speaking Aug. 10 at the end of a two-week vacation in the northern Italian city of Bressanone, offered what he called a \"spontaneous reflection\" on his World Youth Day trip to Australia in late July. What particularly impressed him in Australia, he said, were the \"joyous faces of so many boys and girls from all over the world.\" \"In the great cities of the young Australian nation, those young people were a sign of authentic joy, sometimes noisy but always peaceful and positive,\" he said. Although an estimated 400,000 young people participated in the Australian events, the pope noted that they caused no disorder or damage. \"To be happy, they didn\'t need to resort to vulgarity or violence, or to alcohol and drugs,\" he said. Instead, they drew happiness from meeting each other and discovering a new world, he said. The pope said it was only natural to compare World Youth Day participants to others their age who seek \"false escape\" through degrading experiences that often end in tragedy. Such escapism, he said, is a typical byproduct of today\'s prosperous society that, in order to fill up inner emptiness and boredom, promotes new experiences that are increasingly emotional and extreme.

I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD
The Christians in Orissa and Karnataka, and also in some other States, are passing through the fire of trials and tribulations because of their faith in Jesus Christ. The Minority Commission, Human Rights Commission and the Media, both print and electronic, are vociferous about the mindless persecutions against the Christians. Mar Raphael Cheenath, the Bishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Diocese, has approached the Supreme Court to redress the persecutions inflicted upon, and wrongs done to the Christians. At this critical juncture, when the Church is passing through testing times, let us see what the Word has to say about such circumstances. The words Jesus spoke to the apostles, when he despatched them to various places for proclaiming the Kingdom of God, are very relevant here. He said, “See, I am sending you like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry….So have no fear of them” (Mt 10:16-26). The Constitution of India and human rights considerations give everyone religious freedom. When we, the followers of Jesus, fight for this fundamental right of ours in a united manner, it should be with firm faith and determination. We may face crises and challenges of this kind. But Jesus has promised us, “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Mt 28:20).
